the movie date

dinner and a movie? pick carefully.

Flashdance | 1983 | 95 min | Adrian Lyne

Plot - A Pittsburgh woman with two jobs as a welder and an exotic dancer wants to get into ballet school.

Good date - Working class Cinderella reboot.

Scarface | 1983 | 170 min | Brian De Palma

Plot - In 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug cartel while succumbing to greed.

Good date - This one is best enjoyed with your best buddy on a Friday night margarita mad rampage. There is some serious carnage ravaging throughout the story and it is not for the weak of spirit (or of stomach). There are going to be womanizer macho oriented jokes popping up here and there because, after all, it’s set in the 80s. Bring a date only if he/she is really into gangster movies. There is some serious interesting insights into the nature of the American Dream and the immigration that shaped the United States. You can play that card to sound really smart to your date, when you actually only care about how graphic this movie is in its portrayal of violence and the crime scene in Miami during the 80s.

The Silence of the Lambs | 1991 | 118 min | Jonathan Demme
Plot - An unconventional love story between a convict and an FBI agent, working together to solve a serial killer case before more people die.
Good date - The plot above is actually the excuse I presented to my date to accompany me on this one (poor thing…). Anyways, you two will be scared, thrilled and (maybe) relieved throughout the story. And it’s a classic police movie that puts the slash in the slasher genre with sophistication. A must see. Oh, eat light - preferably salads and vegetables - before watching it. Just saying.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones | 2013 | 130 min | Harald Zwart

Plot - When her mother disappears, Clary Fray learns that she descends from a line of warriors who protect our world from demons. She joins forces with others like her and heads into a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld.

Bad date - Some movies are so bad they are good. This is not the case. What the h*ll were they thinking? Not even the cool looks can release it from the Utterly Boring Kingdom of It Lacks Some Sense and Seriously Better Script Writing.

Machete | 2010 | 105 min | Ethan Maniquis & Robert Rodriguez

Plot - After being set-up and betrayed by the man who hired him to assassinate a Texas Senator, an ex-Federale launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss.

It depends - It’s cool sexploitation material and you might survive the date night if both of you are okay with fictional beheading and evisceration. Otherwise, it might be a killer. Tons of fun if you are thick-skinned though and the xenophobia criticism makes it a very smart movie (yet largely unpretentious, just how we like it here). Unfortunatelly, there are no gay characters yet the women in this pic do not fall behind when it comes to badassery, self defense and standing for good and right. They do not need to be rescued at all, so your lady friend will not be displeased.

Dances with Wolves | 1990 | 181 min | Kevin Costner

Plot - Lt. John Dunbar, exiled to a remote western Civil War outpost, befriends wolves and Indians, making him an intolerable aberration in the military.

It depends - We truly know ourselves when we are left alone and only then can we truly find deserving company. This flick is Into the Wild's inspirational grandfather. You might already have watched it by the title Avatar, remade in blue hues of glorious CGI. Anyway, it’s totally worth checking out with or without a date. If you choose to take company, beware, for it’s very slow paced and contemplative; so, if your date is not sensitive enough to the beauties of the wild west, movie night might go sour.

Odd Thomas | 2013 | 97 min | Stephen Sommers

Plot - In a town in the middle of the desert, a short-order cook, named Odd Thomas, who has clairvoyant abilities, encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark forces. A storm is coming and Odd is hellbent on stopping the impending holocaust.

Good date - Well, no harm in believing in love everlasting, right? Even in spite of living among monsters. And by monsters I mean the living, not the undead nor such.

Lucy | 2014 | 89 min | Luc Besson

Plot - A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

Good date - Very implausible, action packed and adorably full of sh*t. Scarlett’s kicks some serious *ss as the ultimate femme fatale. You want to be her or to have her; either way, tons of fun, everyone!

Matilda | 1996 | 102 min | Danny DeVito

Plot - Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.

Good date - Soft core Carrie; it teaches us about parenthood. Meaning, good comprehensive parents can and do prevent havoc from happening in case their child is telekinetic. There is a lesson here, folks.

The Last Days on Mars | 2013 | 98 min | Ruairi Robinson

Plot - A group of scientists succumb one by one to a mysterious and terrifying force while collecting specimens on Mars.

Good date - Space exploration at its worst. If George Romero had a say in the Alien (1979) script, that’s pretty much the movie that would had come out instead. No rape innuendo or exposed bowels though (meaning: it’s very likely that you’ll still be able to have sex after watching it).
